What is the Falls Prevention Program?

The Falls Prevention Program is a weekly course, usually run over 4-8 weeks, that provides a practical guide on how to minimize the risks of falling at home and in the community. Each session has an educational component and a practical component. Participants are given safe and simple strength and balance exercises to complete daily at home.

Who Is The Program For?

The program is for older adults who may have had falls in the past or feel that they are at risk of falling. It is also suitable for carers of older adults who want to learn more about falls risks and prevention.

Why Is The Program Important?

There is clear evidence that a structured Falls Prevention Program can significantly reduce the risk of falling in older adults. Participants also report a reduced fear of falling, improving balance, mobility and strength.

Program Structure: 6 Practical Sessions

The MoveWise Active Falls Prevention Program uses an evidence-based approach to tailor a course suitable for all participants. Each session combines an educational component with practical activities. Participants are guided through safe, simple strength and balance exercises to practise daily at home. The program is in English.

Session 01

Introduction and Assessment

Falls risk appraisal, introduction to falls prevention and the basics of safe movement. Introduction to balance and strength training.

Session 02

Understanding Falls Risks

Identifying common falls risks and developing awareness of hazards. Progression of exercise program.

Session 03

Balance and Home Safety 

Strategies for maintaining balance and preventing trips at home. Continued progression of strength and balance training.

Session 04

Strength for Stability

Targeted exercises to strengthen lower body muscles and improve overall stability and postural control.

Session 05

Coordination and Confidence

Practical exercises designed to improve coordination, build confidence, and support safe, independent movement.

Session 06

Review and Final Assessment

Reinforcing key techniques for long-term falls prevention, with a final assessment to measure progress and plan the next steps.

Where can the Falls Prevention Program take place?

MoveWise Active can run the program at a Community Center, Residential Care Facility or at a private residence. Individual home-based falls prevention consultations are also available.

Ongoing Strength and Balance Sessions Available 

After completing the program, participants have the option to continue with ongoing sessions in order to maintain and build on their progress so far with the MoveWise Active program.
